The Grand Prix season is off to a good start. So far it had multiple
winners in both the MX1 and MX2 class and this weekend the GP circus set
up camp in The Netherlands for the fourth round of the FIM World
Championships. 20,000 visitors made their way down to Valkenswaard to see
the GP riders battle is out in the sand. For some it is what they’ve
ridden all their lives, for others it’s hell. A few changes were made to
the track and it even had a double jump.

The MX1 class saw Marc de Reuver (NL) take an early lead in moto one but
then Billy MacKenzie (GBR) took over. After 9 laps it was De Reuver in the
lead again to the delight of the local crowd. A little crash sent the
Dutchman back to fourth but the top 5 were within 2 seconds of eachother
going into the last lap. By that time Antonio Cairoli (ITA) had taken the
lead. De Reuver had passed two riders to get into the second position
followed by Jonathan Barragan (ESP) who came all the way from the back.
Moto two had a lot of changes up front again showing that there are plenty
candidates for the world title this year. KTM factory rider Barragan
scored the win and the overall. Tanel Leok (Cairoli’s team mate at Yamaha)
got second in heat two and Cairoli himself moved up to third for 2nd place
for the day. De Reuver crashed out early in the race which was
disappointing for his Dutch fans.

The MX2 class is wide open too. In Valkenswaard Portugese KTM factory
rider Rui Goncalves (POR) won his first GP ever. He needed it too as he
had a bad start of the season so far. Team mate Shaun Simpson (GBR)
completed the succes of the team with his 2nd place overall (1+3) making
team director Stephan Everts a happy man. Nicolas Aubin (FRA) will
probably go home satisfied with third place points in the Dutch sandbox.
Sole American rider on the GP circuit Zach Osborne rolled his Yamaha over
the finish line in 4th and 7th. The 35 minutes + 2 laps motos wore
everybody out.

There’s a one week break before everyone meets again in Portugal. Today’s
GP winner Rui Goncalves will ride his home GP there and Jonathan Barragan
will meet a lot of his Spanish fans on the hard-pack track down in the
South. Home advantage? we’ll see. Agueda, 10 May 2009.
